Managing Distressed Behaviour with Trauma-Informed Practice
This 2-and-a-half to 3-hour session, led by the Scottish Out of School Care Network, explores how trauma-informed practice can support the management of distressed behaviour in children, particularly those affected by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Delivered in person or online (via platforms such as Zoom), the session provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of early trauma on brain development, stress response, and behaviour. Participants will develop an understanding of trauma and its effects, and consider how to respond effectively and compassionately using trauma-informed approaches.

The difference between manageable and toxic stress
ACEs, the 3 Es of trauma, and common trauma responses
How trauma affects brain development, emotions, and behaviour
Understanding behaviour as communication and the role of consequences
Proactive strategies to prevent distressed behaviour
The Regulate, Relate, Reason, Restore approach to support children effectively
