We are delighted to offer the Activate Community Development Course at Geilsland Estate — a free, informal and highly engaging programme designed to support individuals who are interested in making a positive difference in their communities.
This 12-week course will begin on Thursday April 23rd and run in weekly 3-hour sessions, open to anyone aged 16 and over. It is particularly valuable for those working, volunteering, or hoping to get involved in community settings. Activate is designed to help participants reflect on their experiences, build confidence, and develop a deeper understanding of community work. The course is informal, participative, and supportive, encouraging discussion, shared learning and critical thinking. No previous experience or qualifications are required — just an interest in people and community. Participants will take part in approximately 50 hours of learning, with activities tailored to suit the group.
Throughout the course, you will explore:
What community work is and why it matters
Core values and principles of community development
Equality, anti-discrimination, and participation
Local and global issues affecting communities
Practical approaches to group work and conflict resolution
All tasks are fully supported, and the course is designed to be accessible and manageable for everyone. On completion of the course, all participants will receive a guaranteed interview for the BA Community Development degree at the University of Glasgow. There is no obligation to progress — the course is available as a standalone experience — but the opportunity is there for those who wish to continue their learning journey.
This course is ideal for:
Individuals interested in community work
Volunteers and community group members
Those looking to build confidence and skills
Anyone considering further study in community development
People with lived experience who want to give back
